Hello CASPER, I would like to share a PhD opportunity that may interest individuals within your community.
I am a colleague of Jonathan Weintroub and a former electrical engineer with the Next Generation Event Horizon Telescope at the Harvard and Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. I am now working on a Smithsonian-based project aiming to study forests and the effects of climate change by using VLBI methods to measure the scattering of radio signals through vegetation. Our goal is to produce a new microwave imaging tool to monitor tree hydraulics and biomass. Our scientific application differs from this community, but our instrumentation and signal processing methods stem from radio astronomy. We are collaborating with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, which has funded a PhD student position to support this research. The individual will focus heavily on signal processing to develop measurement algorithms, using observational data from experiments in a large, controlled radar test range. Here is a link to the posting and application: https://www.slu.se/en/about-slu/work-at-slu/jobs-vacancies/?rmpage=job&rmjob=12691&rmlang=UK Please share with any individuals who may be interested. I would be happy to connect with anyone who would like to learn more about the project (richar...@si.edu). The deadline to apply is May 11, but if interested in the position please get in touch regardless of when you see this message.
