I figured it out last night—it was a silly mistake on my side.

When I installed the OS, the python command wasn’t available because I had
set it up as python3 (out of habit, since I use that often). In case anyone
else runs into this, installing
*python-is-python3 (sudo apt install python-is-python3)* fixes the issue.
