I have used Castor JDO in a production environment and it performs quite well .. much better than an EJB solution as well (less overhead).
That said, there are some caveats ... it is not perfect, no solution truly is ... but, depending on your object graph, works quite well.
Also, the speed to delivery and development is very good, thus reducing direct costs.
