Hi Kenneth,

Since you repeated this sentiment here and later in the thread, I feel obligated to point something out: Castor JDO is not the only open source Java Object<->RDBMS library available. If you can't get it to do what you want, you should consider other options.

[To be very clear: I'm not suggesting that folks give up on Castor at the first sign of trouble. And I'm not trying to dismiss you (Kenneth) or suggest that your problem is unimportant. I'm just pointing out that there's may be a choice other than "perform major internal restructuring of Castor JDO" and "write own persistence layer."]

The two that I can name off the top of my head are Apache OJB and Hibernate. I've only used Hibernate, so I can only comment specifically on it. It is cosmetically similar to Castor JDO in that it uses DTD-conforming XML-based mapping files and supports many different database servers. Like Castor JDO, It uses an OQL-derived query language. And it has an active community of users and developers, just like Castor.

I don't know if Hibernate (or OJB) will do what you want, but you should give it a try (if you haven't already) before resorting to a from-scratch solution.

Intending no offense,
Rhett
