For those interested in repowering a Catalina 27, the following is estimated
on the high side. Will let everyone know final costs.
Beta BZ482 13.5 HP Diesel w/2:1 Technodrive $5,945 (price
went up Jan 1,
2006)
includes gearbox and new engine panel
Misc installation parts and fasteners (as required) 75
Highrise exhaust manifold option 55
CDI High Performance Prop ` 250
Labor ($95.00/hr - 14 hours) 1330
__________________________________________________________________
TOTAL
$7655
This combination of engine and prop provides good acceleration and a true 7
kt cruise with the best possible fuel economy. It also provides some
reserve for wind and current. My 5411 left something to be desired with
wind and currents at the mouth of the James River with winter NW winds.
P.S. If your boat is in good condition you should be able to recoup the
cost of the engine at resale less any hours on the engine at time of sale.
Mine was well kept and is in excellent condition and we are adding a new
interior to update the boat. Should look almost like new when completed and
a heck of a lot less invested than a new 270.

Hi Robert -- can you tell us the price of your repowering? Ideally broken
out by cost of actual engine and replacement labor? My M18 works quite
well, but have always been curious if one bought and refurbished an older
boat what the brand-new-engine price would be...
Thanks,
Sebastian

Mike - The 5411 is coming out of my 1982 Catalina 27. It has 750 hours and
was overhauled a couple of years ago. We will test compression etc when we
pull it. We've decided to go with the 13.5 hp BetaMarine. Several others
have made the conversion and been very pleased. The extra hp and bigger
prop make a big difference. Will help with the tidal flow here on the James
and beating headwinds out on the Cheasepeake.
