Wow - there are whole books written around those questions.  Very simply put all of these together affect your sail trim and your sail trim.

Not sure what you mean by raising the boom -  if you leave the boom vang loose the boom can lift and the sail will be fuller and have more twist to it.  Using the boom vang you can flatten the sail and reduce twist to flatten the sail out.  Under 12-15 knots I leave the boom vang loose so the sail is fuller and I get more power, above 15 knots I tighten the vang pulling the boom down and flattening the sail.

The cars on the track are adjusted based on what you are flying for a foresail,  I have my cars set somewhere about 2/3 of the way back for my 155 so I can sheet it in better,   I have them more forward for my 110.  When I fly my gennaker the cars are as far aft on the track as they can go.   You have to play with them to find the best place for them for your boat and foresails.

Like I said the boom vang takes the twist out of the main and flattens it out which reduces it’s power.  I usually flatten the mainsail out to try and keep heel under 15 degrees.  You can manage sail shape by using just the mainsheet and the traveler, but it’s better to use both controls to manage sail shape.

You can read all you want or people can tell you but there’s nothing like getting out there and seeing what changing the various controls does.   You may want to check out http://www.sailtrimproducts.com/services.html  Don’s trim sheets are pretty handy.

Subject: Re: catalina27-talk: boom connection

Does raising the boom make the boat go faster.

does the placement of the pullys on the side tracks effect the speed of the boat.

What does the boom vang do that is under my boom on my 1977 C 27.

What is optimal configuration of what I guess is a standard rig.

I was sailing yesterday off the coast of santa monica ca.  new sailor old boat.
