There are some depression marks on the wooded bulk head around where the screws attach the chain plates - {not sure if they are chain plates or not }

Do slight depressions around the screws mean I should change the bulk head ?

They are the chainplates and there is always a debate about replacing the bulkheads.  C-27's have had bulkheads fail. I have one place where a bolt has a slight depression.  My brother, who builds furniture, looked at it and said it wasn't really anything and suggested using Git-Rot and inject the wood right there.  A key place of the bulkhead is where it attaches to the hull.   There I have just  bit of wood starting to rot and I will use Git-Rot there and then decide on taking out the bulkhead.  My brother...no sailor and doesn't like boats...thinks it should be fine but it wouldn't be too hard to repalce the bulkhead (portside, traditional layout) if I decide to do that.

Did you have a survey done before buying the boat?  If so did the surveyor say anything about the chainplates.

I bought my C-27 almost two years ago and is the first boat I've owned.  I use to day sail in Minnesota ($20 for a 19' O'Day...all day!) during the summers...which we always hoped summer would fall on a weekend!  There is a great deal to learn but this forum has been great.  Also, in the northern part of the Bay I joined C-27 Fleet 19 and they have been very helpful....and patient.

Dave,
Check my web site to see what a bulkhead failure and replacement looks like. Also a modification to the chainplates, to transfer the load from the bulkheads to the hull. I was never comfortable letting a chunk of plywood carry the shroud loads. http://members.aol.com/bobdeurer/mod-r2.htm
