A year or two back we bought my father in-law a rechargeable spotlight at Walmart for a small sum. He was thrilled with it. I would be suggesting this as a fathers day present. You never know when this might come in handy.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the advice. I'll certainly keep it in mind. However, the reason I am insisting on a reliable waterproof connection is that I want to be able to shine it on the sail when a some powerboat comes roaring by oblivious to my boat. You know it can take 10-20 seconds to light up the Universal.
Sometimes I think they see my red light as a land based auto taillight, the  green as a traffic light and the white sternlight as the light over the restroom at the marina.

Harvey,

Just be careful when you use it. Once you turn it on you lose your night vision so from then on you only have limited range tunnel vision until your eyes recover. Sometimes in a light mist, haze, or fog they illuminate the particles in they air and you really can’t see very far at all unless the first mate holds it way off to one side so you’re not looking down the beam.

Hi Ralph,
Thanks. I had thought of the trailer connector, but everyone I know who uses it a mast wire connector wraps it in waterproof tape.
I looked in the catalog at the Sealink12 VCR and thought it was just like any other plug.  But I went into the evil empire and looked at it and found that the plug, unlike most plugs, it had a rubber gasket around it that would help keep out water. $16.00 for Sealink and $10.00 for a WM version. Good possibility. Working on finding a trolling motor connector.
Thanks again,

Hi Rudy,
Thanks for your reply, but I forgot to say that I wanted to mount it in the cockpit, where I could use it at the wheel w/o a long cord going to the main cabin. but if the coaming boxdosen't work out, your is the nexr solution,

Harvey,

I guess I'm missing something here.

There are several standard 12 volt jacks that are Marinized,  Sealink 12 VRC, as example.

But short of those, You can easily "Pot" many jacks by encasing the connector in Epoxy or similar product. And with judious Gasketing, can be weatherproofed for mounting.

And if this doesn't sound like a good answer,

I would think about mounting jacks or plugs that are already used in boats such as the Trolling Motor connections

and simply make a small ADAPTER cable.

Also .There are a number of Weather proof connectors such as Trailer Connectors  that would work as well..

Adapter cables are easy to make and are a "Throw Away" item if they get weathered.
