Thanks Dave and John for your responses. To siphon the fuel, I am planning to use the same drill-mounted pump I use for oil changes. Does that sound like a reasonable plan or should I use something else?

I've used that as well.  Couple of caveats - if your tank is full and depending on how your boat sets becareful that you don't end up with diesel going all over the place.  Slowly loosen one of the bolts/screws holding the sender in place and check and make sure diesel isn't coming out.  If it is you'll have to use the fuel line to the engine to drain out enough to take the sender out without making a mess.  The old style senders were the type with a float and an arm - you'll have to work  it out carefully so you don't bend it.

I have used the opening for the fuel gage sending unit on many occasions.  Larger hole than others.  Can see into tank and if necessary can inset a small mirror
