Heck I had my rub rail pretty much buried
for about 2 hours out on Nantucket Sound today and it didn’t come loose –
but I did manage to get the toe rail nice and clean.

For those who may be following this thread and who may
be familiar with the vinyl insert rub rail coming out of the track usually due
to healing and putting the rub rail under water, you can use Gorilla glue to
glue this back and it appears to hold quite well. We tried Gorilla
glue for this three years ago under a section on the starboard side that
continually popped out of the track. It hasn't popped out since.

Mike,
I'm assuming you are referring to replacing the vinyl insert
of the rub rail not the entire aluminum extrusion. (I don't recall seeing
anything but the vinyl inserts on Catalina
Direct.)
The vinyl on my boat was so bad when I bought it that I
decided to replace it rather than trying to clean it. I ordered mine
directly from the Catalina factory,
but it the same difference regardless. My boat was on the hard at the
time.
As the insert comes in a coil, I would unroll it and lay it
out in the sun for a few minutes to soften and increase its flexibility.
After that, putting it in is pretty straight forward. Starting in the
middle of the transom, I would hook about 12 inches or so of the upper edge in
the rub rail track then push the lower edge upward until it locked into the
track. Then I just worked my way around the boat until I got back to
where I started. Having a helper to hold up the length of vinyl helps; it
take the weight off the insert and helps to prevent the insert you've just
inserted from pulling out.
All in all It was a pretty easy job. BTW, I used the
tan (teak-looking?) vinyl, but it comes in gray as well.

Has anyone out there removed and installed a new
rub/rail? my 1975 C-27 is in dire need of a new one and Catalina
Direct has them. Just wondering what kind of a job it really is. Thanks in
advance, Mike.
