I had one of these little engines for the first few years I had the boat. It did the job so long as I kept the prop clean and I wasn’t trying to get somewhere fast. But it’s a sail boat and I like to sail so the lack of power wasn’t a big problem. Until the head gave out to corrosion it started fairly easily with a little glow plug heat.

Against wind and weather I could always get to where I wanted to go but many times I wanted more power. Especially when pushing through a chop.

I now have a rebuilt used engine which I got for the right price and did a good bit of the work myself to get installed. The replacement 12HP 5411 is a much better match for the C27. The added power makes the boat much better when fighting a chop and a current. Would I have replaced the engine if the old Petter still ran, I doubt it. Am I happy to have more power, you bet.

Greetings Petter powered C27 Owners:

My '73 C27 has a Petter AB1W - 6hp.  Its slow and and hard to start - but works well once its underway if conditions are fairly reasonable.

I'm wondering about peoples' experiences with this engine.

Have you ever been in a position where this engine could not push your C27 against wind and waves?

Have you ever experienced abrupt high RPM (engine runaway)?

What's your cruising and top speed?  RPM at these speeds?

Prop diameter and pitch?

Starting routine and/or tips?

I'm considering replacing this engine with a Yanmar 2GM to get more power.  Talking with another sailer leads me to wonder if maybe some prop work might move me a bit in the same direction with much less work.

He said his engine (bigger engine, bigger boat) would sometimes seem to runaway (abrupt high RPM from prop cavatation, he thinks) when being pushed hard.  He had the prop reworked (more pitch) and RPM dropped for a given speed, he could reverse better, and the engine no long ran away.

I'm thinking that if other people have had better experience with this engine that me, perhaps I should give this engine another chance.  Any thoughts from other Petter AB1W owners?

Any suggestions on engine mounts for the Petter?

The engine mounts for my Petter diesel are probably going bad.

The PO allowed fuel to drip on the current rubber ones, and so they are going bad.

The Petter manual recommends solid mounts. But I'm worried about that as the engine vibrations will be transmitted to the hull more.  I don't know how the engine was mounted originally.
