I saw on the teevee a few days ago a military-looking guy (natty beret) going on and on about how prepared the mountain climbers were, how much experience they had, and how they "did everything right".
Well, except that they were on Mount Bleedin' Hood in a season where the weather can be downright nasty, and doesn't discriminate based on how experienced you were.
I hand it to folks who test the limits, and my heart goes out to those guys and their families and friends -- but when it comes to survival, sometimes "doing everything right" means sitting in front of a fire in a big stone house, sipping cocoa, and looking up at the summit thinking "geez, it would be a real pill to be up THERE right now".
My $0.02, and worth every nickel.
p.s. Ralph, thanks for the sentiments, and may the weather and all else smile on you (and all listers) this holiday (early summer) season!
Chris

Subject: Re: catalina27-talk: The Yearly Solstice Posting TF,Thanks buddy! As to the climbers, One found dead in a snow cave near the summit. Now It's looking pretty bleak for the remaining two climbers. The rescue/recovery teams have all but close Air search and are concentrating on the "ground" below the summit.. Near vertical slope that has as much as 10 feet of new snow. The search is pretty sure they went that way because of an anchor "Y" that the climbers had deployed.. They must have laid it during the Over 100 mph winds and snow/ice there last week. Also, the Cat that was found. 3 delivery crew missing. They found the EPIRB in a Sealed box on board and a rope tied around the Saildrive unit. My guess, they deployed a liferaft in 30 foot seas. Not much chance of survival.Nothing more heard about the fishermen..Yes, you are so right. The West Coast from mid California to Alaska.. Isn't the place to be sailing during the Winter time..But like so many of we XY types, there are always a few who want to challenge Nature. And they " Die, Doing what they 'love' to do "STUPID !All my best to you and yours.ralph----- Original Message -----From: tim fordSent: Tuesday, December 19, 2006 11:09 AMSubject: Re: catalina27-talk: The Yearly Solstice Postinggreat post, Ralph!
