Dave,
I believe a diesel engine is best at full throttle, speed is determned by load 
and/or 
gearing of the drive.

       How much throttle do you give the engine.  I baby the diesel...yes, I 
know diesel's hate that but running an old diesel with old motor mounts at 3/4 
throttle makes me a bit un-easy...and that keeps the temp down.  However, I've 
been trying to run the engine a little faster, doctor's (mechanic's) orders.
