Subject: Re: catalina27-talk: Whisker Poles

Lance, on my boat, there are two fittings that
the pole lives on when not attached to the mast
(the second fixture is way forward and not in the
included in the camera's frame) I think
West carries these.

on my old C27 we'd just open the jaw and lock
the pole on the bottom of the cap shroud (second,
inboard arrow) and the pole would ride inside
the pulpit pretty much out of harm's way.

with the pole living on the mast car, sometimes you might
have a problem with things getting snagged on it or
it chafing against the bottom of your headsail when
tacking. As an aside, the Omega 36 I sometimes crew
on (going to Charleston Race Week next week--YAY!)
they have a carbon pole and they actually leave it
attached to the mast when racing BECAUSE the pole
lying there actually helps the headsail ride smoothly over the deck when

tacking.

so there are no hard and fast rules, just whatever
works best for you and your crew.

have fun!

tf
