Dave, If the old transducer is still good, it might work with the new sounder.
Many are interchangeable. For the new one, I would make it flush with the
outside of the hull with a good backing plate inside. Transducers beam is cone
shaped rather than a pencil line. If it is not mounted perfectly straight
down, it does not really seem to make that much difference.
FWIW, I just returned from a boat delivery of a brand new trawler with no
electronics at all. We scrounged up a used sounder and put the transducer in a
plastic baggie of water in the bilge next to a stringer. Worked perfectly for
840 miles.

I bought a new depth sounder and have to replace the thru-hull. The exterior
of the old and new are the same; however, the new transducer does not fit the
old thru-hull. The other difference is the old was a mushroom thru-hull while
the new is beveled. Some have suggested not beveling the bottom but just use a
lot of 4200, one has suggested I see if I can find a mushroom thru-hull that
will fit the new transducer, and two have said...just bevel the hole.

Any opinions?

I don't see why a mushroom thru-hull (if found) would affect the
transducer...but could it.

I know this isn't rocket surgery but I have a terribly bad habit of over
analyzing everything before I do it...so any help (boat or psychological) will
be appreciated.
