Joe,
The springs give plenty of "assist" . Before I mounted the bracket I was
really concerned as I could not budge the bracket using all my 200lbs, but
once mounted the bracket moves with just a nudge from me. I am very happy
with that aspect of the bracket. The 9,9 Merc I have mounted is about 125 lbs
and has a 25" shaft....plenty of leverage.
Like you mentioned I tried to mount the bracket in the same position as the
cutout, being mind full not to cover the drain hole in the lazarette when I
put on the backing plate. My best guess is that I am pretty close to the
original opening. Garelick mounting instructions are pretty solid.
I am sure I bought mine thru WEST Marine for under $300 last fall...check
around for prices, I used their on line sight better price than the catalog.
Even at the $395 price, I would be happy with the Garelick, solid as a rock.
I am going to the boat this weekend and will measure the distance from the top
of the transom to the top of the bracket.

Techlin, is that the 71091 bracket? That is the one I have been considering.
Tell me, how much assist do those springs provide? And how far down the
stern did you mount the bracket? My guess would be to position the bracket so
when the motor is down it is at approximately the same level as the cut out
holes mount would be. I am wondering if it is worth the $350 (plus shipping).

I just launched GUSTY with a Garelick 15" travel OB Bracket, supporting my
Merc. Big Foot motor. So far so good. The Merc weighs 125 on the bathroom
scale, but the garelick seems up to the challenge.
