The river at Gloucester Point and York Town is fine for swimming. The creek has quite a few jelly fish (stinging nettles).
We have anchored off the beach at York Town and taken the dinghy ashore with the kids. The afternoon breeze blows straight up the river, plus there is a good current so be cautious about setting an anchor unless you are comfortable with the conditions. There isn't any shelter; hence there is now a public dock to tie up to. You pay by the hour. If you haven't been there then it is well worth the visit. Now that NOAA charts are available for free (you can download them from Maptech) I've got my laptop setup for navigation.
