We have anchored off the beach at York Town and taken the dinghy ashore with the kids. The afternoon breeze blows straight up the river, plus there is a good current so be cautious about setting an anchor unless you are comfortable with the conditions. There isnt any shelter; hence there is now a public dock to tie up to. You pay by the hour. If you havent been there then it is well worth the visit.
Now that NOAA charts are available for free (you can download them from Maptech) Ive got my laptop setup for navigation. The program Im using is available here.

Hey Mark. Sorry we'll miss you. We visited YRYH last summer and rented a slip, and it was very nice. But we saw a couple of boats anchored just off the docks and it looked very tranquil and tempting. So we thought we'd give it a try. Is the water at Sarah's Creek swimmable (i.e., not toxic) ? I'd never dip a toe in the Elizabeth River, for example, or the Lynnhaven. Maybe it's time for a tetanus booster.

Thats my home port. We are just up the creek on the North West branch from YRYH on the port side just where there is a small branch. I dont expect to be there since we are going out ourselves. We are going to Cape Charles and then to the Mobjack Bay to the East River.
The anchorages in front of YRYH and on the NorthEast branch are both very good.
The facilities at YRYH are excellent and there is also a public dock at York Town $$ but well worth the visit. If you anchor and dinghy ashore at York Town then be aware that the current can be quite strong dont swim outside of the protected areas around the beaches.
