I have an 83 with the 5411 diesel and I've always had to hold the glow plug
switch for a full 60 seconds. I've replaced the glow plugs thinking they
weren't up to snuff and worried about it for 2 years till I read in a manual or
publication that it is normal procedure. When they say 60 seconds they really
mean it too, not 55. I usually add another 10 or so just in case. Just
continue to try the 60 second glow plug routine ( believe me it's a real test
of patience) until you get success. A lot of people will tell you something
else is wrong but a manual or publication I read says that is the best
procedure. I find it amazing that it should take so long but they designed it
not me. Also I looked a long time to find that bit of info so it's
understandable that it was easy to miss. I doubt most diesels are quite that
bad and no doubt the old pros can't wait to disprove the statement but try it
several times yourself and see. Advice is cheap so prove it yourself......
Enjoy your 82 and welcome to the most helpful forum and the most knowledable
group of frinendly people I've ever come across on the internet...... Russ

universal diesel engine and pedestal steering. Â I have 2 major questions that
maybe some one can help me with.

#1 Once started, the engine runs great however, it will not start on its own.
The batteries are new and the starter seems to crank strong. We need to give it
a shot of starting spray each time we need to get her started and the engine
roars to life. Common sense tells me this in not normal. Has any one had this
issue? Â Are there any suggestions as to what may be wrong?

#2 We are in a marina and I am accustom to our previous 22â boat with an
out board. It was easily maneuvered and backed out of the slip. I donât even
have to back out of a slip with the new boat I just need to back out 25 to 30
yards to open water. Here lies the problem. The boat seems to be very
uncontrollable in reverse. Are there some guidelines to backing up without
taking out half of the marina?? Â
