On the first day sail of my new boat we sailed out and had a glorious time, then the wind died so I cranked up the motor and we were coming in and my wife decided to look in the lazarett locker and was horrified to see water pouring over the outboard cutout! I told her it was normal.then I glanced in the cabin and was horrified that there was about 2" of water on the cabin floor! I had been motoring at highest speed (testing the outboard), so I instantly lowered the power and speed dropped from over 6 knots to about 4.5. The bilge pump made fast work of the water and everything seemed back to normal. A quick check here gave me the answer that there was NO check valve in my bilge pump line and the water was siphoning in when extra power lowered the stern. This past weekend I was hurrying to miss some severe storms and again the power was up all the way and I am happy to report that no water appeared in the cabin this time!

"What do you mean 'water problem?'" I asked. He said, "There's water all over the cabin floor." I didn't want to leave the tiller at this point so I explained to him where to look for leak so that I could come down and deal with the problem quickly. He respond, "Oh, I know where the water is coming from. The water jug broke."
