John. That's the only way I have ever done it. If I want to take in some slack in the main (say I had let it out earlier to spill some air) I winch it in. In a stiff breeze I don't believe I have enough purchase to do it without the winch. Letting it out, of course, simply requires releasing the sheet from the groove.
