Ted,

The #1 culprit in "my sanitary system smells but there are no leaks" is not the tank (although that could be a factor) but the hoses.  Over time, they will become permeated with, shall we say, odor.  The first thing you should try is replacing them - and don't skimp, use the highest-quality sanitary hose.  What you'll find is that it is very stiff , hates bending, and needs the ends heated to get over the slip connections.  It's a difficult and messy job.

My '76 didn't have a holding system to begin with.  In case it's any help, my installation is detailed at:

Subject: catalina27-talk: Fwd: Waste tank replacement

The season is ending for me but I am planing some work in the early spring. Number one on the list is to replace the holding tank. I have an 82 and it seems that there is a slight odor that originates from the holding tank compartment. Its not really foul but it is not sweet either. I have done a visual and find no leaks but I suspect the tank is original and is probably getting tired so I would like to replace it before it fails. I know Catalina direct sells replacements. Has anyone had experience replacing the holding tank?
