Ted, The #1 culprit in "my sanitary system smells but there are no leaks" is not the tank (although that could be a factor) but the hoses. Over time, they will become permeated with, shall we say, odor. The first thing you should try is replacing them - and don't skimp, use the highest-quality sanitary hose. What you'll find is that it is very stiff , hates bending, and needs the ends heated to get over the slip connections. It's a difficult and messy job.
