I also have an aviation background and can really vouch for carbon fiber.
Back about 20 years ago, I was at an awards luncheon when this material was
still pretty new, and Torch Lewis brought word from Bill Lear, of Learjet
fame, who had designed a new aircraft using it. He brought a sample, two
inches by about eight inches, by about one-eighth thick. He passed it around
the room and invited anyone to break it in half. Big strong guys couldn't do
it. I could not even bend it at all.
Torch then used it to punctuate his talk, smacking it on the podium every
once in a while. This had the effect of startling Arthur Godfrey, who was at
the head table snoozing.
