This is exactly what I did a few years ago. How far along the track are
you?

I got an old 5411 from a C30 after the C30 was repowered. The 5411 was
badly in need of new rings but was otherwise in pretty good shape. The
engine parts are Kubota tractor parts and are cheap compared to anything
you might expect for a boat. The manifold had recently been replaced
(before they gave up and repowered). I put in new pistons, rings and new
alternator. Made up an adaptor plate to fit the old shaft coupling and
mounted the engine in the cave. We did not change the bed that the
engine sits on. Just modified the mounts. Re used the exhaust much as it
was before. Maybe the exhaust deserved an upgrade.

Overall it has been a success.

With the Petter we could motor at 5.6 knots on dead flat water with a
clean bottom. With the 5411 I can make 6 knots through a small chop with
a head wind even without a perfectly clean bottom.

You MUST buy a new prop. The Petter was Left Hand rotation wheras the
5411 is Right Hand rotation (or vice a versa) Anyway the replacement
prop is mandatory. I don't remember the pitch but it is quite coarse.

Subject: catalina27-talk: Petter repower to Universal 5411 - prop
questions

We are in the midst of repowering our 1973 standard rig, normal draft
Catalina 27 from the 6hp Petter to the 11hp Universal 5411. I hope that
it will be possible to repitch our existing 12 x 8 prop to use the
additional power.

Questions for Universal 5411 powered C27 owners: What diameter and pitch
of prop are you using? If possible, what is the rear ratio of your
tranny? In our case the Petter has a 2:1 tranny, the Universal has
1.8:1 gears. How well does your system work? ie What's your max speed
and rpm? Does anyone know what dimension prop was factory installed on
Universal 5411 equipped C27s?

Thanks in advance,

Paul Meyer Fredericton,

New Brunswick Canada
