No.
This is strictly an attempt to beef up numbers for one purpose:
to attract corporate sponsors.
Not that there's anything wrong with that! corporate sponsors are much
needed!
But what I think racing sailors are objecting to is the process by which
this went about,
with the usual amount of prior communication from USSailing--NONE.
Capron didn't solicit opinions from constituent YC's or OD associations,
like, "Hey, think
this will fly with your membership?" Instead it has been pretty much by
fiat and with
absolutely zero mention of what the additional revenue stream will do to
benefit individual
members.
He may be a nice guy and a decent manager but he seemingly has very
little understanding of
public relations.

Agree with you on all counts.
Imagine your skipper needs to duck below to put on foulies or something.
He (or she) hands off the wheel and
goes below, while a crewmember who has not joined USSailing steers for a
few minutes. Boat behind sees
crew at the helm, googles the crew's USSailing status, sees nothing and
protests....how eff'ed up would THAT be??
Yet distinctly possible under the proposal. Good on CBYRA for at least
getting a gauge on public sentiment!
