I guess I need to do that pvc thing since I have the hang-up issues also. I did it on a previous boat and it worked well but I struggled with the aesthetics of it all. As sailors we are a part of a thing of beauty after all :-)

Why 3/4"? I discovered that the little caps that fit on the plastic turnbuckle covers fit perfectly over the ends of 3/4" pipe. I then gave them a couple of wraps of rigging tape and, voila!
