I went the other direction. I have a laptop in a box under the dinette table. I have a Garmin 48 GPS in the cockpit on the starboard upper area on a bracket. It is wired to the auto pilot. I have another Garmin 48 that is wired to the computer and the computer runs Maptek through a free standing 12V LCD monitor "C" clamped to the table with a free standing keyboard that I can bring to the cockpit. I can cover the screen and in essence "black out" the screen when sailing after sunset so it doesn't cause night blindness. I have my compass light on a dimmer switch for the same reason. I too have a tiller boat. And I too have the Garmin 176C with their blue chip of my sailing area, the Chesapeake Bay. The unit is small and difficult to read in bright sunlight (made even more difficult when wearing polarized sunglasses). The display is small and when mounted on the Port Bulkhead is hard to see when seated on the starboard side with tiller in hand. BUT, I sail in a very easy area and I know the sailing area like the back of my hand. The GPS is used more as a speed indicator. If I were to replace it I would look for a bigger display and maybe one that can rotate to face more toward the center of the boat.
