I can upload routes to the unit connected to the laptop. I can swap it out with the unit in the cockpit. I have a tiller as well. With the units matching I have a spare. With the screen in the dinette it can see it easily in both daylight and nighttime. My charts are on CD's and if in an area for any significant period of time I can copy them to the hard drive. I have an external antenna for the unit at the computer. I can see the speed and course and other info on either unit so I can see what is happening both in the cockpit or below. I went the other direction. I have a laptop in a box under the dinette table. I have a Garmin 48 GPS in the cockpit on the starboard upper area on a bracket. It is wired to the auto pilot. I have another Garmin 48 that is wired to the computer and the computer runs Maptek through a free standing 12V LCD monitor "C" clamped to the table with a free standing keyboard that I can bring to the cockpit. I can cover the screen and in essence "black out" the screen when sailing after sunset so it doesn't cause night blindness. I have my compass light on a dimmer switch for the same reason. BUT, I sail in a very easy area and I know the sailing area like the back of my hand. The GPS is used more as a speed indicator. If I were to replace it I would look for a bigger display and maybe one that can rotate to face more toward the center of the boat.
