---------------------------------------------------------------------- ALCTS Members: Attached and below are brief indications from some our ALCTS interest groups of their plans for the Annual Conference coming in San Francisco this June. We hope this will be of use to you as you make plans to attend the conference. You will note that many groups are still at an early stage in the planning process. Check the Conference Scheduler when it becomes available for further updates. Best regards, Dale Swensen ALCTS Interest Group Coordinator ALCTS Interest Groups at the 2015 Annual Conference in San Francisco Book and Paper The ALCTS PARS Book and Paper Interest Group will be joining with the RBMS Curators and Conservators Interest Group to host a combined discussion session on artist books in libraries. Our plan is to have panelists discuss the creative process as well as the challenges these materials create for libraries. We hope to include a working book artist, a technical services librarian, a research services librarian, and a preservation librarian in the discussion. Cartographic Resources Cataloging The Cartographic Resources Cataloging Interest Group will meet Sunday, June 28, 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. We do not have a location or room assignment, but as soon as we do we will announce this via the various listservs. Tentative plans includes a panel discussion. Unsure about the topics or how the panel will be done. The panel will feature several speakers discussing various topics such as, RDA, Genre Form Headings, and possible BIBFRAME. As well as, have open discussions on various topics, but don't have topics yet. There will be an open call for topics in May. Catalog Form and Function The Catalog Form and Function Interest Group will meet Saturday, June 27 from 3:00-4:00. We will be soliciting speakers to discuss the evolving nature of the library catalog and its relationship to the fundamental mission and expanding services of libraries. Catalog Management ALCTS Catalog Management Interest Group is hosting a program that will be co-sponsored with the LITA/ALCTS Metadata standards Committee Here is a summary: Title: Database Cleanup-Let's Not Sweep it Under the Rug Speakers: Terry Reese, Ohio State University; Amy Rudersdorf, Digital Public Library of America; Kyle Banerjee, Oregon Health and Science University. Description: Data migration is inevitable in a world in which technological infrastructures and data standards continue to evolve. Whether you work in a catalog database or a digital library/archives/institutional repository, working with library resource data means that you will eventually be required to usher data from one system or standard to another. Three speakers working in different library contexts will share their data normalization experiences. Objectives: At the end of this program, participants will: --Understand the concept of data normalization --Understand the impact of the data normalization planning process on library staff and resources --Understand the advantages of data normalization for vendors and developers of new systems and services built for a linked data environment Target Audience: Libraries planning system migration projects, switching ILS; Libraries planning to do RDA enrichment or batch reclamation projects to clean up existing data; Libraries interested in the BIBFRAME project and the impact data normalization will have on the development of systems designed for the linked data environment Cataloging and Classification Research The Cataloging and Classification Research Interest Group is tentatively interested in exploring if or how RDA has affected library patrons' ability to search, identify, select and obtain information resources. We are hoping to identify one or two speakers who are willing to present their research on this topic. A call for speakers is forthcoming. (Recommendations are also welcome!) Cataloging Norms The Cataloging Norms Interest Group will meet at the ALA Annual Conference on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 10:30-11:30 AM (expected). The program will consist of up to three presentations focusing on the dynamics of cataloging and metadata norms and workflows. A call for speakers will be forthcoming. Collection Development Issues for Practitioners The Collection Development Issues for Practitioners Interest Group plans to have a lightning round discussion of three topics. A call for discussion topics will be sent to ALCTS members in May. Collection Evaluation and Assessment The ALCTS CMS Collection Evaluation and Assessment Interest Group is meeting on Sunday from 1-2:30pm. We will have a couple of presentations from 1-2pm followed by a discussion session. A call for presentations and discussion topics will be sent out soon. Collection Management and Electronic Resources The Collection Management and Electronic Resources Interest Group will meet on Sunday, June 28 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. We will invite a few libraries to share case studies about how they have adapted or reorganized their resource sharing operations as part of the ongoing transition from physical to electronic resources. Collection Management in Public Libraries We'll be holding a "Collection Management for Public Libraries" interest group meeting at ALA. Our agenda is pretty loose, and we put out a call for topics a week or two before the meeting, as well as at the meeting. College and Research Libraries The College and Research Libraries Interest Group, which meets Sunday 8:30-10, is working on soliciting speakers to discuss academic library services supporting the use of open education resources. Competencies and Education for a Career in Cataloging The Competencies and Education for a Career in Cataloging Interest Group plans to have a panel discussion featuring new librarians discussing what their expectations are for the skills and aptitudes they will need to be successful in their careers. Also, we plan to have an update on the progress of our cataloging competencies effort. Digital Conversion The Digital Conversion Interest Group will meet Saturday 6/27 from 1:00-2:30 p.m. We don't have topics yet. One item of business will be electing a new chair / co-chair. I will start that conversation online between now and the meeting. Meeting the E-Resources Challenge: Utilizing ERMS in Libraries Digital Preservation The Digital Preservation Interest Group will be meeting at Annual, 8:30am on Sunday the 28th. We're just beginning to solicit presentations, however. I'll send along our program as soon as we finalize it. Electronic Resources Management The Electronic Resources Managements Interest Group is hosting a panel put together by the ALCTS Acquisitions Section's Acquisitions Technology Committee. Their meeting is titled "Meeting the E-Resources Challenge: Utilizing ERMS in Libraries." As libraries add more electronic resources to their collections, systems have been developed to centralize management of licensed records and provide efficient workflows within Technical Services. Are ERMS (Electronic Resources Management Systems) the ultimate solution in managing the ever-increasing complexities of electronic resources? Learn from librarians who have worked with ERMS and can provide advice that will help your library develop best practices in managing electronic resources. Presenters slated for this panel: Emily Cable, Salem Public Library (Salem, OR); Wendolyn Vermeer, Cal Poly Pomona University Library (Pomona, CA); Rose Reynolds, Smith College Libraries (Northampton, MA) Faceted Subject Access Faceted Subject Access Interest Group doesn't have a firm plan yet. The co-chairs have considered "lightning talks" on uses of FAST if there are willing speakers. Or perhaps an open forum for sharing ideas on FAST. MARC Formats Transition The MARC Formats Transition Interest Group will focus on discussion and demos of MARC to BIBFRAME transition tools. We have already scheduled for one presentation with Terry Reese from MarcEdit and will be looking for another presenter. Our session is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, June 27, from 3:00-4:00. Preservation Metadata Co-chairs of the Preservation Metadata IG have decided at this point to discuss the implementation of preservation metadata---what does a realistic implementation look like, what kinds of metadata should we be collecting/monitoring, and what tools can we engage with to make the necessary tasks occur? We are in the general stages at this point; we have a meeting scheduled in late March to more formally hammer out a program. Public Libraries Technical Services The ACLTS Public Libraries Technical Services Interest Group (PLTSIG) isn't sure yet, but one idea is to talk about BISAC or a mix of BISAC and something else as a means for organizing materials in public libraries. Publisher-Vendor-Library Relations The ALCTS Publisher-Vendor-Library Relations Interest Group meets at ALA Annual on Saturday from 4:30-5:30 p.m. for our Business Meeting. All are welcome to attend as it is at this meeting we toss around topics for the future programs. We do a program/panel at each Midwinter and each annual. For this year's annual discussion (held Monday mornings from 8:30-10 a.m.) we are looking at book metadata. We will bring together publishers, vendors and librarians to talk about optimizing metadata for best user discovery. We have some ideas on speakers but nothing firmed up as yet. Role of the Professional in Technical Services The Role of the Professional in Technical Services Interest Group has planned the following program for ALA Annual. Draft Title: Moving into Upper-Level Library Administration Speakers: Carmelita Pickett, Associate University Librarian, University of Iowa Libraries; Paula Sullenger, Assoc. Dean for Information Resources, Texas A&M University Libraries; Beth R. Bernhardt, Assistant Dean for Collection Management and Scholarly Communications, University of North Carolina, Greensboro Three recently appointed administrators for technical services areas talk about their move from department head to upper library administration. Each will discuss lessons learned from the search process and transition issues from three viewpoints. Bernhardt will speak on making the move as an internal candidate; Sullenger will speak on making the move after a long stretch at one institution; and Pickett will speak on moving up in responsibility at multiple institutions. Scholarly Communications The Scholarly Communications Interest Group's meeting will focus on library services and support at institutions with open access policies. We will be looking to put together a panel of speakers that represent different institution types, ranging from research universities to liberal arts colleges, as well as speakers from institutions that recently passed policies and ones who have been supporting these policies for a more extended period of time. We believe this will be of interest to librarians at a wide range of institutions, ranging from those that have passed policies, those that are considering or developing policies, and those that are looking to support faculty who need to comply with funder mandates. Technical Services Managers in Academic Libraries The Technical Services Managers in Academic Libraries IG will meet Saturday morning form 8:30-10:00 a.m. We'll have roundtable discussions again but we don't have topics yet. Once we settle on the topics, they'll be posted to our Connect space and we'll put the word out via various lists. Technical Services Workflows Efficiency The Technical Services Workflows Efficiency Interest Group (TSWEIG) plans to have 3-4 presentations and/or discussion points for the 1? hour time slot. The presentations could encompass a variety of topics including techniques, new developments, problems, technological advances, and/or emerging trends in the workflows associated with the evaluation, selection, acquisition, and discovery of library materials and resources. The group will be meeting Monday, June 29 from 1:00-2:30 PM. ------------------------------ End of Tsig Digest, Vol 35, Issue 4 ***********************************
