Are you new to making subject proposals through the SACO Program? Or would
you like a refresher on how it's done?
Back by popular demand, we will be presenting another session of "Proposing
New and Revised Topical Subject Headings," to be held in conjunction with
the ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco, California!
The workshop is designed to provide participants with an understanding of
when to make a proposal and how to do so. Through lectures and hands-on
exercises using LCSH and the Subject Headings Manual (SHM), participants
will gain an understanding of the research and documentation necessary to
support a proposal. They will also become familiar with the rules for
headings, qualifiers, references, scope notes, and geographic subdivision.
Emphasis will be placed on finding and interpreting the instructions in the
SHM in order to create high-quality proposals. The online Subject Proposal
System will also be demonstrated, and the day will conclude with a
discussion of LC's proposal approval process.
The workshop consists of a slightly modified version of a class offered to
Library of Congress catalogers. It will be led by Janis L. Young, a senior
cataloging policy specialist in the Policy and Standards Division of the
Library of Congress, with assistance from Paul Frank, a cooperative programs
specialist in LC's Cooperative and Instructional Programs Division.
