NISO/BISG 9th Annual Forum: The Changing Standards Landscape Access or
Ownership: Evolving Business Models and Your Institution
Description:
Standards are critically important elements that can make any business
process more efficient. The traditional print subscription services model,
the process of handling standing book orders by libraries, and even the
process of buying, selling, and consuming e-books through a variety of
platforms all require standardized business processes to efficiently get
content from publishers through vendors to libraries and ultimately to
patrons.

As our community adapts to changing paradigms regarding service and
ownership models specific to digital publishing, both the library and
publishing communities need to consider the implications of these changes.
Print content distribution was centered on a sales model, where the transfer
of ownership of a physical object was a core element of the transaction;
this is often not the case with digital assets. Generally, content is
licensed and access is limited; by rights, by term, or by community served.
The implications of this shift are quite broad both for content providers as
well as libraries. What are the business practices, roles and
responsibilities, on both sides of the new digital exchange that all parties
need to be aware of and incorporate to ensure efficient information
exchange?

Data Clean-Up: Let's Not Sweep It Under the Rug (ALCTS Cataloging and
Metadata Management Section)
Description:
Data migration is inevitable in a world in which technological
infrastructures and data standards continue to evolve. Whether you work in a
catalog database or a digital library/archives/institutional repository,
working with library resource data means that you will eventually be
required to usher data from one system or standard to another. Amy
Rudersdorf from the Digital Public Library of America will be speaking on
data normalization from the digital library perspective. Terry Reese of Ohio
State University will discuss the role that tools such as MarcEdit can play
in the context of data normalization and cleanup. Kyle Banerjee from Oregon
Health and Science University will address the role data normalization is
playing in the Orbis Cascade Alliance.
Where: Moscone Convention Center, 2022 (W)
When: June 27, 2015 - 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Holdings Information Forum (ALCTS Continuing Resources Section)
Description:
Kristen Wilson, Associate Head, Acquisitions and Discovery, GOKb Editor,
North Carolina State University Libraries, will speak on The Global Open
Knowledgebase (GOKb), a partnership between Kuali OLE and Jisc. GOKb is an
open data repository of information related to electronic resources as they
are acquired and managed by libraries. This presentation will describe the
ways in which GOKb has addressed holdings information so far, as well as
some of the challenges and opportunities that the project has identified as
a result of this work.

Xiaoli Li , Co-Head of Content Support Services, Department at the
University of California (UC) Davis General Library, will speak on the
potential for rich bibliographic description of resources that BIBFRAME
offers. However linking these resources to library holdings data is not
natively part of the BIBFRAME framework. How will serials cataloging be
impacted by implementation of BIBFRAME? How will libraries handle their
holdings data in BIBFRAME description? Xiaoli will share what UC Davis has
learned from their experiment with converting serials from MARC to BIBFRAME.
She will also present her thoughts on what libraries will need to do in
order to move their legacy serial bibliographic and holdings data into
BIBFRAME.
