Please join us for the ALCTS/LITA MARC Formats Transition Interest Group
Meeting in San Francisco!

Saturday, June 27th
3:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Moscone Convention Center
Esplanade 302

We are excited to announce our speakers:

Roy Tennant
"Ground Truthing MARC"

"Ground truthing" is the verification of remote sensing data by direct
observation. Over the last few years, OCLC Research has been doing the
equivalent for MARC, by exposing exactly how various fields and subfields
have been used by catalogers around the world and over time. Using the
massive WorldCat database and modern cluster computing techniques, data is
extracted, summarized, and reported, to better inform efforts to move this
data into new formats and uses.

Roy Tennant is a Senior Program Officer with OCLC Research.

Terry Reese
"MarcEdit Tools for Linked Data"

Terry Reese will discuss how catalogers can track BIBFRAME developments and
participate locally by beginning to add linked data concepts into their MARC
data. Mr. Reese will show how to utilize MarcEdit's MARCNext Toolset or the
MarcEdit LibHub plugin.

Terry Reese is the Head of Digital Initiatives at The Ohio State University
and the developer of MarcEdit.

Carl Stahmer
"A BIBFLOW Project Update"

BIBFLOW is a two-year project of the UC Davis University Library and
Zepheira, funded by IMLS. Its official title is ?Reinventing Cataloging:
Models for the Future of Library Operations? and it is investigating the
future of library technical services, i.e., cataloging and related
workflows, in light of modern technology infrastructure such as the Web and
new data models and formats such as Resource Description and Access (RDA)
and BIBFRAME, the new encoding and exchange format in development by the
Library of Congress.

Carl Stahmer is the Director of Digital Scholarship at the University
Library, University of California, Davis

Michelle Jeske
"The Libhub initiative and Denver Public Library - Leading Libraries to the
Web!"

The Libhub Initiative aims to raise the visibility of Libraries on the Web
by actively exploring the promise of BIBFRAME and Linked Data. Denver Public
Library joined the Libhub Initiative as a Founding Partner and has served as
its pioneer institution. Ms. Jeske will share DPL?s experience in exploring
and implementing linked data and making DPL?s entire catalog available on
the web!

Michelle Jeske is the City Librarian of Denver.

Please join us for the ALA Annual meeting of the Creative Ideas in Technical
Services Interest Group. This meeting will feature seven lively round table
discussions that each address some facet of the ever-changing world of
technical services librarianship.

Sunday, June 28, 2015
3-4pm
Marriott Marquis San Francisco
Golden Gate C3
ALA scheduler link: http://alaac15.ala.org/node/29217

1. Topic: The impact of discovery layers on Technical Services staff
Facilitator: Erika Johnson, University of San Francisco

While some libraries have made the switch to next-generation library systems
that only have a discovery layer, others are running both a discovery layer
and a traditional catalog. This discussion will investigate whether such
duplication is still necessary for some resources, and the impacts on tech
services staff.

2. Topic: Redesigning libraries and archives using user experience design
Facilitator: Alexandra Lederman, Teachers College, Columbia University

As digital repositories grow into maturity, how can libraries and archives
redesign them to maximize design and patron experience? We'll examine
well-designed and recently re-designed digital archives while considering a
question set inspired by user experience (UX) design.

3. Topic: Streaming media
Facilitator: Beth Bernhardt - Assistant Dean for Collection Management and
Scholarly Communications Streaming Media - Come join the discussion on how
technical services departments are handling request for streaming media. How
do you fill these requests? What are the options for streaming media? And
how are you communicating this information to your users?
4. Topic: Acquisitions of digital materials
Facilitator: Dana Haugh, Teachers College, Columbia University

Materials budgets have shifted to accommodate large journal and database
subscriptions, single-title article access, and most recently, ebook
holdings. Can libraries use the digital age as a means to change the digital
publishing system and distribution?
5. Topic: Assessment and Technical Services
Facilitator: Leanne Finnigan, Temple University Libraries

Though library assessment has long been associated with public services,
technical services departments increasingly play an essential role, both as
supportive partners and as the subjects of assessment. In this discussion,
we will share challenges we face and brainstorm ways to engage in assessment
most effectively.

6. Topic: Using service experience design to create user-centered library
services
Facilitator: Meredith Powers, Teachers College, Columbia University

How can library staff be encouraged take a user-centered approach towards
library services as a whole, rather than as independent entities? The
concept of service experience design takes a macro view of user/patron
experience, and can help us take a broader approach to policy development.
Discuss how looking at the library from a holistic perspective might lead us
to better evaluate and assess the whole library ecology, and deliver better
user services in all contexts.

7. Topic: Cataloging and Describing Graphic Materials: Negotiating New
Terrain
Facilitators: Nicole Smeltekop, Michigan State University Libraries and Tim
Kiser, Michigan State University Libraries As more technical services work
becomes automated, many of us have found that cataloging becomes more
directed toward the unique materials held by our institutions. This
roundtable will focus on practices in cataloging and describing graphic
materials of all kinds (maps, posters, photographs, and more) in both
physical and digital formats.

The Publications Committee of the Collection Management Section of ALCTS is
sponsoring the Sixth Annual Collection Management & Development Research
Forum at the 2015 American Library Association Annual Conference in San
Francisco. Sunday, June 28, 4:30-5:30 p.m. Moscone Convention Center 3012 W

Tony Greiner will discuss a data-driven weeding project in which he
developed a list of common characteristics of uncirculated materials. This
work led to recommendations for identifying and avoiding purchasing books
that are unlikely to ever be used. Tony is Reference and Instruction
librarian at Portland Community College in Oregon. While his professional
interest is in collection use, his best stories are about driving the hippo
truck when he worked for the circus.

Forrest Link and Bethany Sewell are currently investigating the feasibility
of using short-term loans of ebooks as an alternative to traditional
interlibrary loan. They will present their findings at the forum. Bethany is
the Access Services and Reference Librarian at The College of New Jersey
where she oversees the functions of Circulation, Reserves, and Interlibrary
Loan. Prior to coming to The College of New Jersey, Bethany was the Access
Services Librarian at the University of Denver. Bethany received her MLS
with a specialization in Art Librarianship from Indiana University,
Bloomington in 2006. Forrest is the Acquisitions and World Languages &
Cultures Librarian at the College of New Jersey. He received his MLS from
Rutgers University-New Brunswick.
