Affiliate Relations Committee Chair Elaine Franco and incoming Chair Shannon
Tennant staffed a table at ALCTS 101 on Friday, June 26. Attendees,
especially those new to a state or region, appreciated that ARC maintains a
national directory of Association for Library Collections & Technical
Services Affiliates. The opportunity to be active in state or regional
professional associations, and to gain experience applicable to future
national-level appointments, was appealing to those unable to commit to
national conference attendance at this time.

With the American Library Association Annual Conference in San Francisco
this year, a California Library Association Technical Services Interest
Group program from the November 2014 California Library Association
Conference was an obvious choice for Affiliates Showcase on Saturday, June
27. Luiz Mendes, California State University, Northridge, and Kevin Balster,
University of California, Los Angeles, presented ?RDA: Resource Description
and Access: An Update.? The ALA presentation updated the 2014 CLA program
and included information on RDA post-implementation revisions and national
policies (from the Library of Congress, Program for Cooperative Cataloging,
OCLC, etc.), including the use of new fields for bibliographic and authority
records. Attendees actively joined discussion on implementing RDA in their
own libraries and considering options for public catalog display, workflow,
local policies, training, and keeping current with revised documentation.
Slides from the progr!
am, including a much-appreciated list of online and print resources, are
posted at the session site on the ALA 2015 Conference Scheduler
<http://alaac15.ala.org/node/29140> under "comments.?

Discussion during the committee meeting on June 28 acknowledged the
networking opportunities provided through ARC?s participation in ALCTS 101,
in person and as a webinar. While the Affiliates Showcase (now in its fourth
year) has a dedicated conference slot and name recognition among the
affiliate groups, a more specific topical listing in future Conference
Schedulers might attract a wider audience. Topics suggested by the new ALCTS
Program Coordinating Group may be considered when selecting future
Affiliates Showcase presentations.

ARC would welcome the opportunity to add committee procedures and best
practices, including guidelines for ALCTS affiliation, to an updated ALCTS
handbook. Two prospective affiliates (in Hawaii and Michigan) are preparing
to apply for ALCTS affiliation. ARC plans to have new identifying ribbons
for ALCTS Affiliates (that is, the affiliate groups, not the Affiliate
Relations Committee) available for distribution at Midwinter 2016. Such
ribbons could also be requested by affiliate group officers for use during
their state, regional, or local conferences. Shipping could probably be
accomplished via first class mail and absorbed by ARC members or their
libraries.

A large turnover of the ARC membership, migration from ALA Connect to a new
system, and the usual transition of affiliate officers will challenge the
committee to keep the Directory of ALCTS Affiliates up-to-date and
accessible. Incoming Chair Shannon Tennant has experience as an ARC member,
as well as a committee chair within the former Council of Regional Groups.
Incoming member Alissa Hafele (who has served as Social Media Coordinator
for the ALCTS New Member Interest Group) has volunteered to manage ARC?s
Twitter account.

Affiliate Relations Committee expects that its ongoing activities to engage
and communicate with the affiliated state and regional technical services
groups will support the 2015 ALCTS Strategic Plan, especially in regard to
increasing awareness of the ALCTS mission and activities to outside groups
and increasing participation in ALCTS activities for virtual members and
under-involved groups.
