Highlights for the OCLC Research Library Partnership

Next week! TAI-CHI webinar, What You Can do to Make the Transition From MARC
to Linked Data Easier

Jean Godby and Karen Smith-Yoshimura, OCLC Research

Thursday, 5 November 11:00 - 12:00 Eastern Time (8:00-9:00 am Pacific
Daylight Time / 4:00-5:00 pm London)

>From OCLC's experiences in datamining WorldCat to identify entities that can
be exposed to the semantic Web, we've learned that's there's a lot of data
that can be parsed easily and made into "statements" - and sadly, a lot that
cannot be without a lot more effort. In this webinar, Jean Godby and Karen
Smith-Yoshimura of OCLC Research offer examples from their multilingual
bibliographic structure and performers extraction adventures of what
metadata specialists can do now to make it easier to transform text strings
in MARC data into the entity-"things" we later expose as linked data that
others can consume.

This webinar is the most recent in our Technical Advances for Innovation in
Cultural Heritage Institutions (TAI CHI) Webinar Series

session will be available afterwards.

The Partnership now spans from Western Australia to Central Europe, which
means it is not easy for us to schedule at times that work for everyone.
However, we always record our webinars, and we are also more than happy to
either host a discussion following one of our webinars, or repeat a webinar
if feasible. Please ask! Not available to attend a webinar at the scheduled
time? If you register our webinars we will send you an email when the
recording and slides are available. We will also post information about
completed webinars to this list.

>From HangingTogether

Karen Smith-Yoshimura summarized discussions of OCLC Research Library
Partners metadata managers regarding "persistent identifiers for local
collections." Information professionals want to repurpose, present and
connect the data they have created and curated from century-old standards
and practices by publishing library metadata in the linked data framework.
