Best regards, Merrilee Highlights for the OCLC Research Library Partnership Upcoming Works in Progress Webinar: a close look at archival records in MARC Jackie Dooley, OCLC Research Thursday, December 3, 2015 1:00-2:00 pm Eastern Standard / (10:00-11 am Pacific Standard Time / 6:00-7:00 pm GMT) Standards for archival description have been in place for more than thirty years, but what does actual practice look like? In this webinar, Jackie Dooley will give an overview of her deep dive into the four million records for archival materials in WorldCat. MARC provides no straightforward way to extract all records for "archival materials," so OCLC Research has scoped a filter to extract the archival subset from WorldCat. The filter itself suggests a rich discussion question: How does one define archival material in the context of the MARC format? For starters, it encompasses materials in every format represented by MARC catalog records. In addition to compiling statistics on field occurrences, the work highlights differences in description from one type of material to another. The data analysis address questions such as these: How often have DACS and other special materials content standards actually been used? Is it true that archivists usually describe materials at the collection level? To what extent do records link to digital content, and for which types of material? Does the archival control byte fulfill its intent to identify all archival descriptions? This webinar will preview the report that will be published early in 2016. <https://oclc.webex.com/oclc/onstage/g.php?MTID=ef0140d96716ed593ccefb3de89c 07b6e> Register for this free webinar now - a recorded version of the session will be available afterwards. Upcoming Works in Progress Webinar: "I am the content." How and why instructors discover and share course readings Presenters from Temple University Libraries: Jenifer Baldwin, Head of Reference and Instructional Services Richard Lezenby, Librarian for Psychology and Political Science Anne Harlow, Librarian for Music, Dance, and Theater Tuesday, January 12, 2015 11-noon Eastern Standard / (8:00-9:00 am Pacific Standard Time / 4:00-5:00 pm GMT) Temple University librarians conducted 10 structured interviews with faculty in order to learn more about how and why they choose and share content with their students. The interviews revealed how the faculty experience of discovery is rooted in their self-identity as readers and experts, and is something they aim to model for their students. The results from these interviews may suggest ways for libraries and publishers to influence what content faculty select and integrate into their teaching. <https://oclc.webex.com/oclc/onstage/g.php?MTID=e5c4b7282a1eab1c33af6dadf9d9 e2fa8> Register for this free webinar now - a recorded version of the session will be available afterwards. What are we working on? What are you working on? This OCLC Research Library Partnership occasional webinar series is a place for us to talk about work happening in OCLC Research - we'd like to present our work informally and get feedback from you, our Partners. We'd also like this to be a venue for Partner institutions. What are you working on that everyone should know about? What input would help you move forward? Let us know! <mailto:[email protected]?subject=Works%20in%20progress%20webinar> Slides from recent presentations from OCLC Research staff are now available online. Role of ISNI in Research Information Management <http://www.slideshare.net/oclcr/role-of-isni-in-research-information-manage ment> . In this presentation, Senior Program Officer Titia van der Werf describes ISNI (International Standard Name Identifier) and the organizational and service infrastructure behind it, as well as OCLC's role as the ISNI database administrator and assignment agent. In addition, Titia highlights OCLC's entity metadata modeling work to show how OCLC can provide added value to ISNI, and conversely, how ISNI as an identifier hub can provide added value to linked data initiatives. She also points to future directions for research information data in the semantic web. Titia gave this presentation at the euroCRIS Barcelona Strategic Membership Meeting <http://eurocris.org/activities/membership-meetings/eurocris-strategic-membe rship-meeting-barcelona-0> on 11 November 2015. Data Designed for Discovery <http://www.slideshare.net/oclcr/data-designed-for-discovery> . In this presentation, Senior Program Officer Roy Tennant explores the reasons behind the adoption of linked data for libraries; library initiatives intended to demonstrate the benefits of linked data and; and the applicability of library focused standards for solving the issue of library resource visibility. He also identifies how this approach will enable a rethink on the way resources are described and the potential positive impacts on library workflows. Roy gave this presentation at the LITA Forum <http://litaforum.org/> on 13 November 2015 in Minneapolis, MN.
