.        Have you ever wondered how cataloging is done? 

.        Do you want to be able to understand MARC records?

.        Are you interested in practice to build a Dewey Decimal
Classification number? 

.        Do you want to learn copy catalog for commonly used library
material, such as print books, CDs, and DVDs? 

 

In this workshop, through practical information and hands-on exercises, you
will gain an understanding of cataloging practices, rules, and tools, as
well as the nuts and bolts of copy cataloging. The course will cover
cataloging rule - Resource Description and Access (RDA), MARC format and
Dewey Decimal Classification system. 

 

At the end of the workshop, you will feel comfortable with the basics of
cataloging, be able to build Dewey Decimal Classification number, interpret
MARC records and be ready to begin copy cataloging of print books, CDs, and
DVDs.

 

Course Description: This all-day hands-on workshop taught in a computer lab
will provide plenty of opportunities for copy cataloging practice.  Students
will learn how to build Dewey Decimal Classification number, work with MARC
records, OCLC Connexion Browser (a cataloging tool), and authority files.
They will also learn copy cataloging of three types of material: print
books, CDs, and DVDs.  Cataloging cheat sheets, MARC templates, glossary and
list of cataloging resources will be provided to all participants.   

 

Who Should Attend: Anyone from the library community with an interest in
learning the basics of copy cataloging and Dewey Decimal Classification.
