Hello colleagues,

I am happy to announce an opening at the Library of Congress in the ISSN
Section of the U.S. Programs, Law, and Literature Division. The opening is
for a librarian (GS 9 with promotion potential to GS 13) to participate in
the work of the U.S. ISSN Center. Although the position description on USA
Jobs is generic and covers cataloging and acquisitions of both monographs
and serials, the work to be performed involves assigning the unique
identifier, ISSN, to continuing resources, creating catalog records for
these resources, interacting with ISSN requesters and other ISSN centers
worldwide, work on special national or international projects, and other
activities of an ISSN center.

ISSN requests are received from publishers, vendors, digitizers, the USPS,
CONSER libraries, other ISSN centers and others. Over 40% of the resources
to which ISSN are assigned are electronic continuing resources. The ISSN
Section frequently undertakes special projects to assign ISSN to back files
from major publishers, or to collections of journals either on request of
publishers or digitizers, or as part of international efforts coordinated by
the ISSN International Centre in Paris. ISSN staff interact with publishers
and ISSN centers worldwide on an almost daily basis and often work with
challenging continuing resources such as resources available on novel
formats or devices.

We welcome applicants who wish to engage in the unique work of an ISSN
center as the ISSN Network prepares to participate in the emerging linked
data environment.
