The Catholic outcry over President Obama being honored at Notre Dame's commencement continues with four bishops condemning the decision and the National Right to Life and other pro-life groups asking Notre Dame president Fr. Jenkins to rescind the invitation.The Cardinal Newman Society petition now has over 190,000 signatories. Pro-life battles waged on in the senate this week with Senator John Ensign's inclusion of Crisis Pregnancy Centers in the National Service bill and Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid's statement that he could support a national health care bill including abortion coverage. How much money does Planned Parenthood Receive? Rep. Pete Olson (TX-22) is sending a letter to the Acting Comptroller General of the GAO, requesting the amount of federal funding that has gone to Planned Parenthood and other specific organizations, from FY2002-2009. This letter has been sent on an annual basis the last several years, however they have not reported any information regarding funding since FY2001. Please ask your representative to sign Rep. Olson's letter. This was a legitimate concern. In a response to a questionnaire from RH Reality Check during the campaign, Obama replied that he did not support federal funds for crisis pregnancy centers. On the Senate floor Ensign stated, "I wished to make sure that somewhere down the line somebody at an administrative level doesn't exclude somebody because they have a different political philosophy. We want to make sure the people in these organizations are included." Catholic Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) who has accepted over $367,000.00 from lobby groups that support abortion rights, led the fight to reject the Ensign amendment stating that it was "not needed" and asked her colleagues to reject it.
