While conducting the CBC along Nemei Road this morning, I was alerted
by a "chink - chink" call to what appeared to be an adult non-breeding
female ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK. I observed the bird in good light,
perched at the top of several deciduous trees about .25 mi east of
Hanshaw Rd. and flying back and forth across the road. There were
houses in the vicinity and, I think I recall, feeders. The breast was
light-brown and streaked. I did not notice any reddishness on the
breast. It was not until later in the afternoon, in talking with Chris
T-Hymes, that it occurred to me that it could have been a Black-
headed. Unfortunately, I did not study the bird with that in mind. He
pointed out that Black-headed would be equally, if not even more
likely, at this time of year.
I would imagine that, if the bird has been finding food at the nearby
feeders, it will be there into the near future. Good luck to anyone
who goes after it in the morning.
