Fritzie came over about 5 PM and we took a walk in several areas on my
property--field, woods/creek, yard. Here's what we found:
EASTERN MEADOWLARK
KILLDEER
NORTHERN CARDINAL
RED-TAILED HAWK (pair, has nested in my woods for years)
NORTHERN FLICKER
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER (drumming, later feeding)
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER (chased off the feeding Sapsucker)
EASTERN PHOEBE
BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE
HORNED LARK (small flock flying, then landed in field and disappeared in the
short grass)
AMERICAN CROW
SONG SPARROW
FIELD SPARROW
SAVANNAH SPARROW
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH
AMERICAN ROBIN
CANADA GOOSE (small flock flyover)
BLUE JAY
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD
EUROPEAN STARLING
No TURKEYS seen, but fresh footprints in sand by creek
Didn't check the GREAT-HORNED OWL nest location (on neighbor's property)
This morning, a pair of HARRIERS looking for breakfast over the fields on
Skillet Rd.
Question: I've been told that HORNED LARKS nest early, sometimes along
roadsides. Anyone ever find their nests?
Bloodroot, Blue Cohash, and Hepatica in bloom. Emerging Trillium, Trout Lily,
Wild Ginger. Mourning Cloak Butterfly flutterby.
------Kathy Strickland, Union Springs
PS: Saw the MNWR fire today around noon. Was surprised how black the smoke was.
