For the first time since February, we saw an EASTERN SCREECH-OWL today in our
nest box on Simsbury Drive in northeast Ithaca. Much jubilant leaping and
whooping has ensued. Still, I am trying to be guarded in my hopes that we will
have a fourth consecutive winter with an owl in the box, as the last owl
occupant was ousted prematurely by a couple of squirrels.

Yesterday my son and I saw a new yard bird -- a COMMON RAVEN heard calling and
seen soaring in slow circles right above our driveway, close enough for us to
plainly confirm the wedge-shaped tail without magnification.

Finally, I'll note that I saw 30+ GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS along the East Trail
in Sapsucker Woods on Thursday and a FOX SPARROW at the Freese Road gardens on
Wednesday. I got only a brief, frustrating look at the latter bird as it
flushed from the northwestern corner of the plots and flew north along the tree
line and out of sight.
