This morning a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH took a sunflower seed from our kitchen window feeder, flew to a dead lilac branch a few feet away, and proceeded to cache the seed in a crevice in the bark. It worked quite hard at this task, finally stopping when it was satisfied. However, no sooner had it finished, when a female RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER flew to where the nuthatch was sitting, causing the nuthatch to beat a hasty retreat. Without hesitation the woodpecker proceeded to gobble down every bit of the cached seed. The big bully!!! Now I have a new word for my birding lexicon: "thieving red-bellied woodpecker."
