This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of February 10, 2014 Highlights: ----------- RED-NECKED GREBE TRUMPETER SWAN CANVASBACK SURF SCOTER GLAUCOUS GULL ICELAND GULL THAYER’S GULL LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL SNOWY OWL RED-HEADED WOODPECKER YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER RED-SHOULDERED HAWK ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK PEREGRINE FALCON GRAY CATBIRD YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER EASTERN TOWHEE FOX SPARROW PINE SISKIN PURPLE FINCH Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 2/12: A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen from East Road. Onondaga county ------------ 2/11: 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen on the Larned Building in Downtown Syracuse. 3 TRUMPETER SWANS were seen in the Seneca River in Baldwinsville. 1 has left but the remaining 2 are still present today. 5 CANVASBACKS continue in the river also 2/12: A SNOWY OWL was seen at Hancock Airport. 2/13: At the Inner Harbor on West Kirkpatrick Street in Syracuse the Gulls continue to be seen, mostly in the late afternoon. 12 ICELAND, 3 GLAUCOUS, 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED and 1 THAYER’S GULL were seen. Except for the Thayer’s these gulls are seen every day. A SNOWY OWL was seen on Rt. 370 at the Hayes Road intersection east of Baldwinsville. 2/15: A PINE SISKIN was seen briefly at a feeder in Baldwinsville. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was spotted in Fayetteville. An EASTERN TOWHEE MADE ANOTHER APPEARANCE AT THE CARPENTER’S BROOK FISH HATCHERY IN ELBRIDGE. 2/16: A GRAY CATBIRD was again spotted at Carpenter’s Brook Fish Hatchery. It was found today as well. Madison County ------------ 2/11: PURPLE FINCH, FOX SPARROW and RED HEADED WOODPECKER are among the birds being seen at a feeder on Carpenter Road near Sheds. 2/15: A SNOWY OWL is still being seen ner the Fenner Wind Farm. Oswego County ------------ 2/13: An adult male SURF SCOTER continues in the Oswego River. It was seen near Bridies Manor up from the mouth of the river and was seen through the 16th. 2/16: 2 YELLOW RUMPED WARBLERS were again seen at Rice Creek Field Station in Oswego. A female EASTERN TOWHEE was seen at a feeder on County Rt.45 north of Fulton. Jefferson County ------------ 2/15: At least 23 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were seen at Stonu Point State Park. An ICELAND and GLAUCOUS GULL were spotted on manure at a farm on Rt.193 in Ellisberg. A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER wa seen on Snowshoe Road in Henderson. 2.16: A SNOWY OWL was seen on County Rt. 13 near Grass Point State Park.
