Greetings. This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of 
December 23, 2013
 
Highlights:

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
------------

     12/20: 5 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen on East Road.
     12/22: 2 SNOWY OWLS were seen in the mucklands along Rt. 31.


Oneida County
------------

     12/18: A SNOWY OWL was found near Sauquoit. One SHORT-EARED OWL was seen 
at the intersection of Miller Road and Rt.31.
     12/19: 5 SHORT-EARED OWLS were present at the Miller Rd. location.
     12/21: 52 species were counted on the Clinton/Utica CBC. 2 SNOWY OWLS were 
seen and one more was seen just outside the circle.


Onondaga County
------------

     12/18: A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen west of Baldwinsville at the 
intersection of Rt. 370 and Rt. 690. 2 SNOWY OWLS were seen at Hancock Airport.
     12/19: 14 species of waterfowl and a RED-THROATED LOON were see on 
Onondaga Lake near Liverpool. 
     12/22: A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen flying near the marina in Liverpool. One 
ICELAND and two GLAUCOUS GULLS were seen at Willow Bay on Onondaga Lake.
     12/23: One GRAY CATBIRD and two HERMIT THRUSHES were seen at the end of 
the creekwalk where Onondaga Creek enters Onondaga Lake in Syracuse.


Madison County
------------

     1218: SNOWY OWLS were seen at the sod farm above Chittenango and Peterboro 
Road south of Canastota. Two more were seen on the 19th., one on Nelson Road 
and another on Mile Strip Road both south of Canastota.


Oswego County
------------

     12/19: A SNOWY OWL was seen at Oswego Harbor. An ICELAND and GLAUCOUS GULL 
were seen on the Oswego River in Fulton. A PINE GROSBEAK made a quick visit to 
a feeder in Constantia.


Herkimer County
------------

     12/17: A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen on Lamanna Road east of Dolgeville.
     12/22: 2 SNOWY OWLS were seen on Cole road north of Little Falls.


Compilers note: 
     Keep your eyes peeled tomorrow evening for high flying geese. Rumor has it 
some of them may have antlers.
