Details: about 1:30pm Ann was driving the Wildlife Drive at Montezuma NWR, and
I was in the back seat to be able to see out the left window better. When we
were abour halfway along the Shorebird Flats impoundment (about here: 42.99,
-76.735), which is the pond on the left after the Seneca Spillway and before
the road turns left, we saw a large all-dark bird flying south toward us over
the pool, but close to the road and only a few yards high. It had a long
slender extended neck, an extremely long down-curved bill, tapered wings, and
long trailing legs: a Plegadis ibis. It made a U-turn at the south end of the
small impoundment, and we implored it to land so we could get a better look. It
obligingly alit along the far edge of the pool opposite us. Using my scope I
could see the narrow pale blue strips of bare skin above and below the lores,
which is diagnostic for Glossy Ibis. The eye, lores, and bill were dark, as was
the area directly behind the eye. The neck, back, and breast were a rich
reddish chestnut, contrasting with the dark iridescent-green wings. This
coloration is very different than the iridescent golden hues of the White-faced
Ibis we saw last year. We watched it a few minutes, and Ann sent out a text
rare bird alert, then we moved on while it remained. Sorry about the delay
before she posted it to Cayugabirds-L.
