Greetings: This is the Syracuse Rare Bird Alert for the week of February 26.

Highlights:
ROSS’S GOOSECACKLING GOOSEEURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEALEURASIAN WIGEONGOLDEN

Montezuma National Wildlife Preserve (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands 
Complex(MWC)------------
     2/27: A ROSS’S GOOSE was seen in the mucklands along Rt. 31 near the 
potato building.     2/28: The season’s first TREE SWALLOW was seen at 
Carncross Road. A ROSS’S GOOSE was seen from East Road and also VanDyne Spoor 
Road. An EURASIAN WIGEON was seen at Carncross Road.     3/1: An EURASIAN 
GREEN-WINGED TEAL and an EURASIAN WIGEON were found at the Visitor’s Center. 
They both continued through yesterday. A CACKLING GOOSE was seen at 
Knox-Marsellus Marsh.     3/4: 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen at Carncross Road.

Derby Hill Bird Observatory------------
     The hawk counting season at Derby Hill (Oswego County) is off and running. 
Although officially starting on 3/1 the best day this week was 2/28 when 70 
birds were counted including the first GOLDEN EAGLE and the first 
RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS.  A big welcome back to Anna Stunkel who is our hawk 
counter for the second year.

Oswego County------------
     3/4: An EURASIAN WIGEON was found on Ox Creek at Co. Rt. 14 south of 
Fulton. It was relocated again today.

Onondaga County------------
     3/1: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on Watervale Road in Manlius.     3/3: 2 
BLACK VULTURES were seen north of Rt. 5 in Fayitteville just east of the 
Onondaga Country Club. These are perhaps the same two birds seen recently at 
the OCRRA facility in nearby Jamesville.

Madison County------------
     3/4: A NORTHERN SHRIKE continues on Eden Hollow Road east of Erieville.

Oneida County------------
     2/27: A RED CROSSBILL was seen at Woodgate along Rt.28.     2/28: A 
CACKLING GOOSE was seen in Sherrill.     3/1: An apparent migrant FOX SPARROW 
was seen at a feeder in Durhamville.

Herkimer County------------
     3/3: 2 RED CROSSBILLS were seen on Atwood Lake Road east of the Hinkley 
Reservoir.
