This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of January 27, 2020 Highlights: ----------- RED-THROATED LOON HARLEQUIN DUCK RUDDY DUCK BLACK SCOTER ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK GLAUCOUS GULL ICELAND GULL LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL BLACK-HEADED GULL SNOWY OWL SHORT-EARED OWL RED-HEADED WOODPECKER COMMON GRACKLE DICKCISSEL SAVANNAH SPARROW FIELD SPARROW CHIPPING SPARROW LARK SPARROW PURPLE FINCH Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 1/28: A SNOWY OWL was seen in the mucklands on Rt. 31 west of the Seneca River. Onondaga County ------------ 1/28: This was the last sighting of the DICKCISSEL on Limeledge Road in Marcellus. 1/30: A CHIPPING SPARROW continues in Manlius. 1/31: A FIELD SPARROW was seen on the Creekwalk north of VanRenselear Street in Syracuse. 2/1: This was the last sighting of the BLACK-HEADED GULL at the Liverpool Marina on Onondaga Lake. also seen there were an ICELAND GULL, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, a GLAUCOUS GULL and a PEREGRINE FALCON. 2/2: A COMMON GRACKLE continues at Melo Circle in Clay. A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at the Liverpool Marina. An ICELAND GULL was seen on the West Shore Trail of Onondaga Lake. A RUDDY DUCK was seen at the Inner Harbor on West Kirkpatrick Street in Syracuse. A SNOWY OWL was seen at Hancock Airport. Oswego County ------------ The LARK SPARROW at Hinman Road north of Pulaski is present today for the 28th. consecutive day. 1/28: A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Oswego Harbor. 1/30: The adult male HARLEQUIN DUCK was again seen from Fort Ontario Park at Oswego. 2/2: A BLACK SCOTER and a RED-THROATED LOON were seen at Oswego Harbor. A FIELD SPARROW continues at a feeder in Constantia.. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen from Rt. 481 north of Fulton. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen on Bishop Hill Road north of Pulaski. Cayuga County ------------ 1/31: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues at Fair Haven State Park. Madison County ------------ 2/1: A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, a GLAUCOUS GULL and an ICELAND GULL were all found at the Madison county Landfill south of Canastota. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at the intersection of Eatonville Road and Eaton Hollow Road east of Erieville. Oneida County ------------- 2/2: A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, uncommon so far this winter, was seen from Rt. 8 south of Poland.
