This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of March 02, 2020 Highlights: ----------- RED-THROATED LOON SNOW GOOSE ROSS’S GOOSE GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE CACKLING GOOSE EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL TUFTED DUCK PEREGRINE FALCON GOLDEN EAGLE LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL ICELAND GULL GLAUCOUS GULL SNOWY OWL RED-HEADED WOODPECKER NORTHERN SHRIKE LARK SPARROW GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ On 3/7 a flock of SNOW GEESE estimated to be 50,000 in number were seen at the north side (Wayne county) of the mucklands along Rt. 31 wast of the Seneca River. The next day the same (probably) group were observed at Puddlers Marsh (Seneca County) from East road. 2/5: A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen at Carncross Road. A ROSS’S GOOSE was seen at the Visitor’s Center. 2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen at VanDyne Spoor Road. 2/7: A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen in the mucklands along Rt. 31. An ICELAND GULL was seen at Carncross Road. 2/8: At East road a GOLDEN EAGLE, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, a LAPLAND LONGSPUR and 2 SANDHILL CRANES were found. Cayuga county ------------ 3/2: The TUFTED DUCK was seen again in Little Sodus Bay at Fair Haven State Park. 3/3: An immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen at the camping area on Sand Point Drive in Fair Haven State Park. Onondaga County ------------ 3/3: 3 CACKLING GEESE were seen in Skaneateles Lake from the Village. 3/4: An EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL was seen in Onondaga Lake from the West Shore Trail. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen in the Seneca River from Mercer Park in Baldwinsville. 3/6: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at Three Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. An ICELAND GULL was seen from the West Shore Trail on Onondaga Lake. A SNOWY OWL was seen at Hancock Airport. A CACKLING GOOSE was seen at Mercer Park in Baldwinsville and seen again of the 8th. Derby Hill Bird Observatory ------------ The first official full week of Hawk counting at Derby Hill yielded 213 raptors. The Highlight was the seasons first GOLDEN EAGLE on 3/5. Oswego County ------------ The LARK SPARROW at Hinman Road north of Pulaski was seen yesterday making it 62 days. Not seen yet today. 3/5: A RED-THROATED LOON and a PEREGRINE FALCON were seen at Fort Ontario is Oswego. Madison County ------------ 3/4: A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was found on Ditchbank Road north of Canastota. 3/6: A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 5 ICELAND GULLS and a GLAUCOUS GULL were all seen at Ditchbank Road. 3/8: A CACKLING GOOSE was found on Colton Road in Canastota. Oneida county -------------- 3/7: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues at Verona Beach State Park on Oneida Lake. Herkimer county ------------ 3/6: A rare for anywhere in New York GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was seen at photographed at a feeder at the corner of Albany Road and Soncody Road north of West Winfield. Despite much effort the bird has nor been seen again. 3/7: A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen between Old Forge and Eagle Bay in the Adirondacks.
