The next monthly meeting of the Cayuga Bird Club will be held Monday, October
14, 2024, 7:30pm at Foundation of Light (391 Turkey Hill Rd, Ithaca, NY 14850).
"Ticks and the Ripple Effects of Disease in Ecological Communities" will be
presented by Dr. Joel Brown, a Postdoc at Cornell University Baker Institute of
Animal Health and the Department of Public and Ecosystem Health In the
Northeast US, ticks and associated diseases have become an enormous public
health issue. There are few groups of people more aware of, and exposed to, the
risk of tick-borne diseases than birders. In this talk, I will discuss how
ticks are embedded in the wider ecological community, the relationships they
have with birds, and attempt to debunk some myths surrounding tick-borne
disease. I will present some possible solutions and open some engaging
discussion on how to make our local birding less risky. About the Speaker: Dr
Joel Brown is a postdoctoral associate at the Baker Institute of Animal Health
and the Department of Public and Ecosystem Health at Cornell university. He
trained as a community ecologist at Queen Mary, University of London, Imperial
College London, and the Czech Academy of Sciences. He is passionate about
biodiversity in many forms, particularly how it is being affected by
environmental change and what this might mean for public health and vector
borne disease. There will be a dinner with Joel at Sumo Restaurant (at the
Cayuga Mall on Triphammer Rd.) at 5:30 pm. Please rsvp to cl...@juno.com by
noon Monday (10/14) so reservations can be made. Colleen RichardsCorresponding
