On the 32bit version that sounds like a bad install disk. Try reburning the ISO.

Concerning the 64bit version not working or at least not being able to
launch GNS, here are the steps I used install the program and get
everything working:

1. Install Ubuntu

2. Update everything that is already installed. You need to go under
system administration and use the Update Manager. It will usually do
it automatically for you.

3. Install GNS3 by following the instructions here
http://gpl.code.de/oswiki/GplcodedeApt to add the latest and greatest
repositories for it. Otherwise you end up not being able to save
projects you create.

But use the following changes:

Update your sources.list for Ubuntu
Append the following lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

# gpl.code.de
deb http://gpl.code.de/ubuntu jaunty/
deb-src http://gpl.code.de/ubuntu jaunty/

Once you have made the changes, check for updates, you should get the
latest and greatest version that way.

4. Install GNS3 by doing a search for it using the install
software/add software
